poetry readings overlorded by the mysterious BatBot6000
⊳ THE EVIL GRIN POETRY SERIES
This series ran from 2008 (I think!) to 2024. Started at various Annapolis cafes, and spent a few pandemic years on Zoom. Might it, phoenix-like, rise again? Keep the embers in your heart, and see. Extreme thanks to the many, excellent featured poets who have graced the microphone, and our incomparable open-readers. As well, to those who came to listen, I want to say it has always meant so much to us. The magic would have been impossible without such warm, wonderful people. <3 <3 <3
⊳ POETRY OPEN MIC at NEW DEAL CAFE
3rd Saturdays 1pm-3pm
• Open Reading (poetry)
• Free event
• Cafe specialties: Food, Drink, Entertainment, Wall Art
• Where: New Deal Cafe, 113 Centerway, Greenbelt, MD.
Open Mic Rules: Limit 2 poems or 5 minutes, whichever is more brief.
(What this means: Do a bit of gauging. Factor in total stage time, including banter and intro to poem. An example is if you have a poem that is more than 2.5 minutes, your next one has to be a shorter poem, or skip that second poem.)
Readers toward the end of the list might be asked to shorten their sets if time gets tight.
Time Permitting, after the list is completed, Texas Round Robin (when the mic is free, and the mood strikes you, go up and read 1 {ONE} poem, then yield the mic to the next TRR participant. You can do this as many times as you want.)
Emcee: (lowly minion*) Rocky Jones
* The above readings are produced by BatBot6000, a mysterious and elusive society represented by a winged automaton and fronted by various lowly minions. The Board of Mystics consists of members unnamed and unknown.
Featured poets at our readings have included Barbara DeCesare, Randolph Bridgeman, Devin Taylor, Analysis, Grace Cavalieri, Le Hinton, Ellen Cole, and other superstars. Hey! Look! The partial list of superstars continues: C.L. Bledsoe, Alan King, Susan Moger, Joanne Van Wie, George Miller, Hiram Larew, Grace Cavalieri.
We have no affiliation with any venue in which we read, other than they very kindly let us hold readings. If it's a venue that is selling something, though it is not necessary, we would be very pleased if you make a purchase when you attend, if it is within your means.
Wearily and Warily,
